Football Association of Ireland Backs Resolution Seeking European Football Ban on Israel
The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to present a official proposal to European football's governing body, demanding the banning of Israel from continental club and international tournaments.
Grounds for the Recommended Suspension
This motion, which was proposed by Irish side Bohemians, cited claimed violations by the Israel Football Association of a couple of important European football regulations.
- Failure to apply and uphold an proper anti-racism policy.
- Organisation of clubs in disputed territories without the approval of the Palestrian FA.
Vote Outcome and Next Steps
As stated in an announcement from the Irish FA, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with seven opposed and two abstentions.
The association plans to officially present this request to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the prompt ban of the IFA from Uefa competitions.
In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was posed to members. It was approved by a majority.
Previous Uefa Deliberations
Uefa had previously put on hold intentions to exclude Israel at the end of September, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the area.
Although they never officially confirmed considering an extraordinary meeting on the issue, plans were understood to be well developed.
International Backdrop
The FAI resolution comes after comparable demands in September from the heads of Turkish and Norwegian football associations for banning Israel from international competition.
Those requests were made after United Nations experts asked Fifa and Uefa to ban the Israeli FA, citing a UN commission of inquiry report that accused Israel of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.
Israel has denied these allegations and described the findings as outrageous.
Potential Consequences
Should European football's authority decide to ban the IFA, it would probably strain relations with the US administration – co-hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an action.
Even though Uefa has the power to exclude Israeli teams from European competitions, it might not be able to prevent them from competing in qualification for the World Cup, which is governed by world football's governing body.
