Critics have accused the German head of government, Friedrich Merz, of adopting what is described as “harmful” rhetoric regarding immigration, following he advocated for “massive” expulsions of individuals from metropolitan centers – and claimed that anyone with daughters would support his stance.

Unapologetic Position

Merz, who took office in May promising to counter the growth of the right-wing AfD party, on Monday reprimanded a journalist who questioned whether he wished to retract his strict comments on immigration from the previous week considering widespread condemnation, or say sorry for them.

“I am unsure if you have offspring, and female children among them,” Merz said to the journalist. “Speak with your female children, I suspect you’ll get a very direct reply. I have nothing to withdraw; in fact I reiterate: it is necessary to modify certain things.”

Political Reaction

The left-leaning opposition accused Merz of emulating far-right organizations, whose claims that women and girls are being singled out by foreigners with sexual violence has become a worldwide extremist slogan.

Ricarda Lang, criticized the chancellor of delivering a condescending message for girls that failed to recognise their real societal issues.

“Maybe ‘the daughters’ are also frustrated with Friedrich Merz only caring about their entitlements and security when he can employ them to defend his totally backward-looking policies?” she wrote on the platform X.

Public Safety Emphasis

Merz stated his priority was “security in common areas” and highlighted that provided that it could be guaranteed “would the mainstream groups restore confidence”.
