Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Thrilling Double Overtime Win
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined Oklahoma City in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the game-winning baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the champions a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.
"Determination and defense," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the game, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were presented with their championship rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the franchise moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
The Pacers will have the chance to get some early revenge on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Luka Doncic was not enough to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
