James Comey was formally accused just days after Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald told the court they intended to present multiple motions to terminate the legal matter before a court case, arguing the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully appointed to assume control of the proceedings.

James Comey's legal matter was initially handled by the original attorney, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into another political adversary - the New York official - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Prosecutors allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the Senate by claiming he had not approved an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, block and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.

Public Statements
