White House Reveals Federal Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the end of September but excluding the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
