Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
